For many of us, mornings are a daily struggle. Perhaps even a race against time, and some of us have turned it into an art form. The battle between the cosy embrace of soft pillows and warm bed sheets, and the constant demands of the school day running through one’s head often leaves students rushing to get to homeroom on time. But for some, being late seems to be more of a lifestyle choice than a consequence of morning chaos. So, the question is: Is it better to be fashionably late or right on time?
The answer to this seemingly straightforward question isn’t quite as simple as it might appear. Not everyone neatly falls into one of these two specified categories, and even within those groups, there exists a spectrum of individuals.
Within this variety of morning routines that occur each morning at ISL and beyond, live the Alarm Clock Challengers and Time Optimists, who both share a common perspective of cherishing the moments just before their alarms go off.
Alarm Clock Challengers love the thrill of hitting the snooze button. Those extra minutes of sleep can feel like pure gold in the morning, and then racing to get ready. An adrenaline rush that adds a certain excitement to the day.
On the other hand, Time Optimists believe in the endless possibility of just a few more minutes. Using the morning as an opportunity to finish last minute projects, check social media one more time before homeroom or grabbing a last bite of breakfast before leaving the house. But often, that “one more thing” turns into several, and before they know it, they’re running late.
“For example, I will stay up late till midnight working on a project, but then have to finish it off in the morning and after I have to hurry up to be on time” – Y11 Student, Claire Roberts
Both groups manage to find a certain charm in their lateness, whether it’s through gaining some more minutes of their beauty sleep or the chance to get a bit more done before beginning the day.
On the flip side, there are also individuals who prioritise being on time, such as the Punctuality Pros and the Early Birds. Punctuality Pros are students who have mastered the art of time management. They wake up with just enough time to get ready, have breakfast, and make it to school with a few minutes to spare.
Meanwhile, the Early Birds take it a step further, they don’t settle for simply being on time but aim to be early. Giving themselves time to chat with friends, finish off their work or perhaps enjoy a little bit of peace before the day begins.
In the end, the choice between being fashionably late or right on time comes down to personal priorities and values. While being fashionably late might seem appealing, it’s important to consider the long-term consequences. So, which one are you? Do you prefer the thrill of rushing in fashionably late, or do you value the benefits of being right on time?
