The temperature is dropping, the days are becoming shorter, the weather is more gloomy, and it’s almost December. The winter season is here, meaning some people are feeling happier than ever, and others are feeling under the weather. However, with the right mindset, hopefully you’ll be able to see winter as a more comforting and calming season, even if it’s more dark and downcast.
Keep reading to see my tips on how to brighten winter and make it more enjoyable.
Watching winter themed movies
This is a classic way to enjoy the winter season more, especially in December, when festive spirits are high. Any winter themed movie is a great way to feel more comforted during these months. Any nostalgic movies are good as well, as it can remind you of your childhood. Classic winter movies include Home Alone, Love Actually, Elf, the Chronicles of Narnia, I,Tonya, Little Women, and more. A nostalgic movie that my family and I watch every year is The Holiday. It’s a great romance film with a sweet ending, and it also reminds me of family and Christmas, even if it’s a dark day.
Listening to music
Music is the best way to relax and brighten your mood. Listening to your favorite songs will boost the dopamine and serotonin in your brain. Additionally, December is the perfect time to listen to any Christmas or festive songs that can make you look forward to winter break. You can listen to anything – either classic pieces, or newer ones. The most important thing is that you like the songs you’re listening to, and you’re happy listening to them during the winter.
Creating a cozy atmosphere
Most people have heard the saying that your room is a reflection of your mind. Therefore, creating a cozy, relaxed atmosphere in your room is a helpful way to feel a bit better during the gloomy days of winter. Some ways to brighten up your room for this season could include the following: adding warm lights (fairy lights, candles, salt lamps, etc.), putting multiple comfy pillows and blankets on your bed, and playing ambient background music. Wearing comfy clothes at home is also an important aspect of adding a cozy atmosphere to your house. These are all simple but effective ways to make your bedroom more comfortable. Some of these things can also be applied to several different rooms in your house, for example, the living room, the dining room, and more.
Cooking and making drinks
Another thing that is important to everyone are drinks and food. Making nostalgic, warm drinks such as hot chocolate, coffee, tea, and more, is a good way to get in a relaxed and comfortable mood. They’ll warm you up if you’re cold, and they’ll help you unwind with their warmth. Additionally, cooking food and baking is just as important. Nostalgic foods or goods are the best way to lighten your mood and to feel better, especially warm foods. For example, in cooking, any soup, roasts, and stew are a great idea. For baking, any warm pastries or desserts are good as well. Once again, the most important thing is to cook whatever food is the most comforting to you.
Spending time with loved ones
Lastly, a lovely way to spend winter is with the ones that you love, and people that are close to you. Sometimes, spending time alone and doing things you like is great as well. A few things you can do are shopping, going on a walk, playing board games, and making food. Spending time with the people you love can be a fun way to pass time, especially if it brings laughter and smiles.
In the end, the most important part of winter is to make it as enjoyable as possible in your own way. Even if life is busy, try to look for at least 20 minutes every day where you can relax and do something that you enjoy, even if it is something minor.
Have a great winter! ❄️☃️
