“It’s out with the old and in with the new.” – Sharpay Evans, 2007
The final issue of The High 2022-2023 is upon us and with it comes a new generation of editors.
Two years ago, I joined The High as an illustrator and writer. Now I sit in the Editor’s (figurative and magnificent) chair and write this letter to you all, and let me tell you; the pressure is real! It’s a tough act to follow with the countless great editors we’ve had since the start of The High and all I can do is my best.
This year we’ve seen it all, from controversial takes to celebrations of feats to the start of a new section- fiction, and we’re ready to take on another year full of brand new surprises!
Much has changed in the two years I’ve been a part of this publication. We began solely as printed papers until we created our very own website. We started supervision under Ms Brennan until she became Ms Pearcy… We began with Sharanya and Tanvi as editors until Saoirse and I staged a coup. We said goodbye to our Y13s and with them our proud Editor-In-Chief; Pavi.
But rather than focusing on the changes and losses, this publication is about looking forward. We will continue to put out the standard you expect of us and will uphold the spirit of The High as we take it to new highs (pun intended) in the coming year.
Keep this spirit in mind as you read our writers’ fresh articles.
Take a spin with Madeleine to learn about the busting of one of Italy’s oldest and most prominent Mafia. Mudit explores how technology has affected art, particularly focusing on the controversial role of AI. Chloe reviews the heavily anticipated third season of Ted Lasso. As well as this, lucky readers, we have two enchanting poems for you in this issue, one from Sahana and one by Klara.
Mr Lloyd has written a response to an article published in the last issue which is a thoughtful and absorbing read. Discover a new book to read (and watch) this summer with Book Reviews, this time with a twist… Bewitched and Little People are also back with their fourth chapters in this issue, so make sure to read on. Following the topic of books Mai discusses Booktok and its power over the publishing industry. Finally, Petra walks us through the controversy surrounding book bans and why they happen.
As this is the final issue of 2022-2023, I wish you happy readings and I’ll see you all next term!
