This quote has a lot of personal significance to me. One of the most intriguing college essay prompts I came across during college application season was: What Maya Angelou quote do you most connect with? And while scrolling through birhglty colors ‘inspiring quote’ photos, I came across this one. My parents thought it was bold and a risky decision to call life a bitch, but it was the essay that got me accepted to my dream university.
Because the reality is, life is a bitch. We see that now, especially within the news, as global conflict spreads and human rights are violated daily. We see that in our personal life, when a topic we didn’t study appears on the test, or when the school decides to ban phones for DP students without consulting us. It is not the best option to just sit back a angry, and watch injustices happen. We need to go out there and kick ass. And it doesn’t have to be big, like overthrowing a government, but sharing your voice and opinion goes a long way; sharing information about events can change the world. Words are powerful.
There is a lot of kick ass in this issue of the High. We have Lautaro talking about Venezuela, Tanu talking about the lack of media coverage in conflicts, and Martina and Anna going more local, talking about school spirit. I also had the pleasure to be able to interview Mr. Carins, a former Journalist, who arguably is one of the most kick ass people I have ever met.
If this issue inspires you to kick some ass yourself, don’t be afraid to stop by the MPR on Thursdays and say hi. If your busy schedule doesn’t allow Thursdays, you are welcome to send us any articles you may write in your free time.
